Mayor of Halton Charity Support

As Councillor Pamela Wallace officially starts her term as the Mayor of Halton, we are excited to announce that Halton Haven Hospice has been chosen as one of the charities she wishes to support this year, alongside Fortuna Female Society.

“I have chosen Halton Haven Hospice as one of my charities this year because, throughout the years in my personal life and work as a ward Councillor, I have always been aware of the remarkable and important work the Hospice carries out within Halton. The Hospice has touched so many families with its compassion, dignity and unwavering care, and it stands as a vital source of comfort and support for our community. It is a privilege to champion their work during my Mayoral year”. – Mayor of Halton, Councillor Pamela Wallace

On Wednesday, our team were invited to a special installation ceremony at Runcorn Town Hall, where Cllr Pamela Wallace officially began her year of office. We are really excited for what the next twelve months will bring and are grateful to receive this support with Karen Allen, Chief Executive Officer at Halton Haven Hospice saying:

“I am incredibly proud and deeply grateful that we have been chosen as one of the Mayor’s Charities for 2026. This recognition means so much to everyone connected to our organisation, our patients, families, staff, volunteers, and supporters. We are truly honoured to work alongside the Mayor throughout the year ahead and would like to sincerely thank them for believing in our mission and helping raise awareness of the care and comfort Halton Haven provides. Every day, we see the difference that compassionate hospice care makes during some of life’s most challenging moments, and partnerships like this help us continue providing that vital support across our community. Together, we can continue making a meaningful difference to the lives of local people and their loved ones.”

Putting, chipping, and hooking the way to making a difference.

On the 1st of May 2026, 10 teams took to the green at Helsby Golf Course for our annual Charity Golf Day.

“Our Charity Golf Day at Helsby Golf Club was a fantastic success and a truly memorable day for everyone involved. We were delighted to welcome ten teams, made up of both corporate and family players, who all helped create such a brilliant atmosphere in support of Halton Haven Hospice. A huge thank you goes to David Edwards, who made the day extra special with his incredible trick shot show and hilarious commentary video at the end of the event. Everyone loved spending time with him and sharing their golfing stories and banter throughout the day. The sunshine certainly helped make it a perfect occasion, and there was great excitement around the Hole in One competition, generously sponsored by ABC Taxis, with an amazing £2,026 prize on offer. Most importantly, everyone had a wonderful day while raising valuable support for Halton Haven, and we are already looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better.” Karen, Fundraising Manager

Together we raised an incredible £5167.41, which will go towards providing palliative and end-of-life care to those in our community, at Halton Haven Hospice.

The day wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s support. We would like to say a huge thank you to our hole sponsors: Anthony’s Travel, Esposito’s, Fresenius Kabi, Halliburton Electrical LTD, ABC Taxis, Nyland & Beattie, NRW Electrical, Treadwell Carpets, and United Utilities. As well as to Helsby Golf Club for a beautiful well maintained course and support on the day, and David Edwards who brought a little golf magic and a lot of expertise, providing live commentary for our golfers making the day extra special – thank you so much!

Winners on the day…

We also had winners for Nearest Pin, Putting Challenge, and Hit and Miss. Well done to everyone who came along on the day and to all our winners!

Hopping success this Easter

Throughout March and April 845 children took part in our Hop for the Haven event, fundraising to make a difference. Each Hop for the Haven was unique with hundreds of children popping on bunny ears – some hopping, dancing, singing, or manoeuvring around obstacle courses set by their nursey, school, or community group.

“We loved seeing all the Hop for the Haven events, they were so enjoyable and each one special in its own way. Children of all ages, with participants from child minder groups to primary schools, really took to the spirit of supporting their local Hospice while having fun. Thank you so much to everyone who took part – you have truly helped to add life to days through raising vital funds.” Karen Fundraising Manager

Together, everyone involved managed to raise an incredible £11,280 which will go towards providing the best palliative and end-of-life care to people in our community. We couldn’t carry on providing care, compassion, and comfort without our communities support and it is great to see even the youngest in our community enjoying making a difference.

“The Bunny Hop was a fantastic way to start to teach our children from a young age how to value and support such wonderful and local charities like Halton Haven . The children were really excited on the day to join in on our Hop , especially the chocolate bunny treat and certificates at the end.” Hop for the Haven 2026 participating group.

On top of the amazing ‘Hops’ children also had the chance to enter a colouring competition and guess the name of our Hop for the Haven rabbit. We received an incredible 78 entries and our rabbit has spent all week judging the entries. After a long week saying “Wow, I love all the colours and variations!” the winners of the colouring competition are…

Winner 1

Winner 2

We can also reveal that our Hop for the Haven rabbits name is… Daffodil! All winners will be contacted by Halton Haven Hospice to claim their fluffy rabbit teddy prize.

International Nurses Day 2026

This International Nurses Day, we celebrate the incredible nurses who are the heart of our hospice. The theme this year is ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.’

Here at Halton Haven Hospice we try and empower our nurses every day by prioritising their wellbeing, valuing their voices, and supporting their ongoing professional development. We have initiatives such as:

  • Positivi‑tea provide a dedicated space for the art of reflection — a form of clinical supervision and an informal, supportive platform where nurses are guided by our resident health psychologist to explore clinical cases for learning, reflection, and emotional support.
  • Protected learning time
  • Strong peer and multidisciplinary support
  • Opportunities for growth, our nurses are trusted and empowered as leaders in care.

By fostering a compassionate and reflective environment, we enable our nurses to continue delivering exceptional, life‑affirming care to patients and families. Our nurses and staff truly make an impact every day…

“Just so welcoming from the reception, to nurses, to the doctors – just fabulous.”

“You never think and never hope that you need a hospice, but if there is a time that you do, this is the place you’ll want your loved one or yourself to be.”

“Staff treated my family member with dignity.”

“I was made very welcome, put at ease and felt that I could ask anything at all.”

“Staff are kind and very caring.”

We hope we can continue to empower our nurses into the future, and want to take this opportunity to say thank you so much for the incredible difference you make to lives every day here at Halton Haven Hospice.

Celebration of Support

On the 14th of April, we held a Celebration of Support event inviting some of our corporate supporters and individuals into the Hospice.

“The event was a huge success, and it was great to see so many of our supporters come together to see the collective impact they have made. We can’t thank them enough for their ongoing support.” Tina (Fundraising Manager)

The afternoon was filled with appreciation, what to expect in 2026, networking, and of course a beautiful spread put on by our Hospice catering team. It was held in our newly renovated Patient Lounge which many of the attendees helped make possible. Some attendees said:

“The Hospice feels so light when you walk in”

“The team are building something really special at the Hospice”

“My relative has received the best care here, we’ve got to help where we can”

“What you do here, is so important, we will do all we can to support”

Thank you to everyone who attended the event and an extended thank you to every single of our supporters. Whether you’re a one off donor, fundraiser, or regular giver, we couldn’t carry on our work without the incredible community we have alongside us. Together, we can add life to days.

The Forget Me Not Appeal may mean something different to different people. For those who have lost a loved one at Halton Haven Hospice we hope this month provides a moment to remember and celebrate someone who holds a place in your heart, while making a difference in their memory. For others, we hope this month raises awareness of the vital work the Hospice does and encourages you to support to help add life to days for those at Halton Haven Hospice. Together, we can raise funds to provide patients and families with the care they deserve.

This Forget Me Not Appeal, to help ensure we can continue to provide the best palliative and end-of-life care to patients and their families, when it truly matters, we are asking people to; Go Purple, raise awareness and/or fundraise. From purple hair, wearing purple clothes, completing a sponsored challenge, to purple cakes – everyone taking part will help to make a difference to the lives of people in our community.

From awareness raising acts to big fundraisers, everyone plays a part in helping to support the vital care the Hospice provides every hour of every day, and we can’t wait to see all the creative fundraising ideas this June.”

Thriving Community Support Group

In partnership with Asthma + Lung UK, our Respiratory Practitioner and volunteers, run a social support group for anyone with a lung condition. Giving them a space to socialise and connect over common struggles.

The group has grown since September 2025 and we would like to say thank you to everyone who attends and supports to make this community group possible. There has been lot’s going on at the group recently:

Volunteer Heroes

The volunteers help support this group and without them this community group would not be possible. Anne, started volunteering for the group after attending our Breathlessness Management Programme at the Hospice and was recently successful in securing a grant of £5k for the group via a local pharma group based in Halton – well done!

Supporting the Hospice

Awareness of Halton Haven Hospice is created through this group and members support Halton Haven Hospice where they can, including a £100 donation from one member earlier this year.

Petra from Viridor Runcorn EFW visited Halton Haven A+LUK Support Group

“On Friday I had the pleasure of attending Halton Haven A+LUK in Runcorn, Merseyside. The group was established in September 2025 and is run by volunteers Anne and Elsie and supported by HCP Barbara. Together with support from Halton Haven Hospice they applied for funding to support their group from, Viridor Runcorn EFW. They were successful! Viridor representative Tom Armstrong came along to present a cheque for £5000. Everyone was thrilled and Anne, Elsie and Barbara are busy looking at how they can use the money to best support the group. It was a lovely meeting, with 2 new members joining. It’s been a brilliant start for the group and great to see that all the hard work from Anne, Elsie, Barbara and Jacqueline from Halton Haven Hospice has paid off. Thanks for inviting me!

The group meets every second Friday of the month, 11:45am to 1:45pm at Murdishaw Community Centre, Barnfield Avenue, Runcorn WA7 6JW. If you think this group is for you, please do pop along and say hello!

Taking a digital step forward

This week marks an exciting step forward for Halton Haven Hospice as we officially go live with Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA). Moving from paper-based systems to a fully digital prescribing platform is a significant achievement that strengthens the safety, efficiency, and consistency of the care we provide.

EPMA enables clearer prescribing, reduces errors, improves communication between clinical teams, and ensures real-time access to medication information at the point of care. For our Hospice, this transition supports our ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, patient‑centred care while embracing digital transformation that future‑proofs our services.

“This milestone reflects the hard work, adaptability, and collaboration of our teams. Thank you to everyone involved in making this positive change a reality.” Clinical Director

We are constantly striving to improve our services to ensure we are providing the best palliative and end of life care. One of the ways we can do this is by listening and adapting to patient and family feedback. Your feedback helps to shape care for others, you can complete our Service User Survey HERE.

Welcoming our new Chief Executive Officer

As Halton Haven Hospice looks towards the future, we see exciting changes that will support us to continue providing the best palliative care within our community.

To ensure we continue to provide compassion, care, and comfort we welcome with open arms our new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Karen Allen, who’s vision for the Hospice is clear – To ensure we continue to learn and grow to help add life to days, with kindness and expertise.

Karen has been a part of Halton Haven Hospice since September 2023, joining as Director of Care & Operational Services, a leader with over 25 years of healthcare experience. Her background serves as a perfect backdrop to lead and inspire the Hospice through positive changes.

Stepping into her new role she shares the below statement:

As I step into the role of CEO at Halton Haven Hospice, I do so with a deep sense of humility and a profound sense of responsibility.

Hospice care is not about giving up. It is about showing up, with compassion, dignity, expertise, and unwavering support during some of life’s most sacred moments. It is about ensuring that no one walks their final journey alone, and that families are held with care long after they say goodbye.

As I begin this chapter, I want to first honour the extraordinary team who make this mission possible every single day. Our staff and volunteers are the heart of all that we do. Skilled and compassionate, they create comfort where there is fear, peace where there is uncertainty, and connection when it matters most.

To the families who have trusted us: thank you. It is a privilege to care for your loved ones. Your stories shape us. Your courage inspires us. Your feedback will continue to guide us.

As CEO, my commitment is clear:

• We will lead with compassion and integrity.
• We will prioritize clinical excellence and continuous learning.
• We will listen — to our patients, families, staff, and community.
• We will advocate for greater awareness and access to hospice care.

Halton Haven is about living fully, with dignity, comfort, and meaning.  Together, we will continue to build a culture where every life is honoured, every voice is heard, and every moment matters.

I am honoured to serve alongside you and excited for what we will accomplish together.

With gratitude and purpose,

Karen Allen Chief Executive Officer Halton Haven Hospice

We are excited for the new chapter Karen is leading the Hospice on, and we hope you can join us for the journey.

That’s a wrap – Christmas Tree Collection 2025

Every year we partner with JustHelping to collect and recycle Christmas trees to help raise vital funds for our Hospice.

For the last few weeks, volunteers have been clocking up the miles collecting 824 trees from households that have generously donated. We are pleased to say the last 2 were collected this morning!

This wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support we received from our local community. Support came from many wonderful individuals, as well as companies including; Amazon, Halton Housing, Onward Homes, Plus Dane Housing, Treebor Tree Services, Bellway Homes and Vale Community Church.

Due to the amazing generosity and support we received the 2025 collection raised £16,662! This is an incredible amount which will go towards delivering the highest standard of palliative care to the people of Halton, helping us truly add life to days. Thank you so much to everyone involved.
