The Hospice regards Complementary Therapy as an integral part of the care we offer. It employs its own Complementary Therapists who are supported by a number of qualified volunteers.

We understand that coping with a serious illness can leave you feeling stressed and emotionally drained. We offer these treatments alongside standard medical care because they have many beneficial effects such as aiding relaxation, reducing stress and helping to induce feelings of wellbeing.

Reflexology works through massaging certain points (reflexes) on the feet which can help other areas in the body through stimulating the body systems. It also can create a deep state of relaxation.

Essential oils are chosen to suit an individual’s specific needs and then gently massaged into the body. Massage is very soothing and relaxing, promoting both physical and emotional wellbeing.

Reiki is the flow of energy between one person and another energy which helps to re balance the body and mind and promote self-healing.

The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively on or above the body in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms.

Indian Head massage is a form of massage that works on the upper back, neck, shoulders, arms scalp and face which are the areas that people normally carry tension. Given with or without the use of oil it can help with aching shoulders and tension headaches and often leaves people feeling refreshed and clearer headed.

Relaxation (using relaxation therapeutically) can help you to relieve stress, control anxiety, improve sleep, and have a better quality of life in general.
When the average person is awake, many thoughts are going through his or her mind. The waking mind is very active. The aim of relaxation therapy is to quiet the mind; to allow thoughts to flow in a smooth, level rhythm, and induce the relaxation response. This mental quiet allows for rest and rejuvenation that does not always occur, even during sleep.

These can be given as a single session however to get the maximum benefit from these therapies we recommend a course of six sessions.

As the name suggests Complementary Therapies work alongside your current treatment and should never be regarded as an alternative to medical treatment.

You can access then both as an In Patient or whilst attending Day Hospice. Alternatively, you can access these services on their own through referral from your GP, Nurse or the Hospice Family Support Team.
